Benzene and toluene are toxic and harmful substances that can cause a decrease in white blood cells and a decline in immune function when inhaled by the human body. Benzene, toluene and other benzene derivatives are also carcinogens. The World Health Organization and the US EPA believe that human exposure to 1ug/m3 of benzene can increase the risk of leukemia to 4-8 people per million. After phasing out leaded gasoline, in order to maintain the octane rating of gasoline, a large amount of aromatic compounds (30% to 50% by volume) are added to gasoline. After gasoline combustion, a large amount of benzene and toluene are emitted into the ambient air from the exhaust of cars.
