Background description:

Blood Group Antigen is a type of molecule expressed on the surface of red blood cells (RBCs) that can stimulate the body's natural or artificial immune system to produce corresponding antibodies. The most widely studied and clinically valuable antigens are ABO blood group system antigens and Rh blood group system antigens. Blood type antigens cover a wide range of molecular antigen types, including peptides, glycoconjugates, and glycoproteins. ABO blood group antigens are found in renal epithelial cells and other epithelial cells, including endothelial cells, as well as in the coagulation system involving von Willebrand factor (vWF). In addition, they also appear in secretions such as saliva, gastric juice, and semen.

Human blood type antigens A and B exist on red blood cells in the form of glycolipids or glycoproteins. These two antigens belong to trisaccharides, while H antigen belongs to disaccharides and is the backbone component of A/B antigens. The only difference in chemical structure among the three is the monosaccharide at the end of the sugar chain. The end of the sugar chain of A antigen is N-acetylgalactose, while the end of the sugar chain of B antigen is galactose. Compared with A and B antigens, H antigen has one less sugar molecule at the end of the sugar chain.
