The basic steps for making honey pills in traditional Chinese medicine are as follows: combining herbs → making strips → forming pills → packaging → storage.
1. Mix the refined honey and medicinal powder in proportion (the ratio of medicinal powder to honey is generally 1:1 or 1:5, and there may be some that are less than 1:1, depending on the nature of the medicine and the season. Generally, herbs containing sugars and oils use less honey. Medicines containing more cellulose and loose texture use more honey. Use less honey in summer and more honey in winter. Mix evenly and make dough like pellets. When mixing, honey is usually added while hot (if it contains gum, resin or volatile components, wait for the honey to cool slightly before adding and mixing), fully and evenly, so that it is fully moisturized inside and outside, with consistent color, moderate hardness and softness, and can be molded freely.
2. After placing the dough like soft material for a certain period of time, the medicine and honey ingredients are mixed and moisturized, and a certain viscosity is generated. Then, the fully automatic pill making mechanism can be used to make pills with uniform size, smooth and full particles. (Small pellet making machines can be used for small-scale production.)
3. When making pills, to avoid the medication sticking to hands and utensils, an appropriate amount of lubricant can be used during operation. Lubricants can be made by heating glycerol or sesame oil (peanut oil) and beeswax in a certain proportion to melt. Summer beeswax can be added a little more appropriately.
4. Packaging and Storage: The honey pills made can be wrapped in wax paper, glass paper, plastic bags, or wax shells and stored in a cool and dry place. (Note: Do not expose the prepared pills to direct sunlight.)
