The 518S thickness gauge measures by using the standard wedge cutting method. In this case, the sample is cut at a specified angle. The thickness of the coating can be calculated using simple geometric relationships by projecting the width of the cutting surface. 518S controls the damage of the coating to a very small conical hole as shown in the figure. In a measuring microscope, a series of concentric circles can be seen. By measuring the radius difference of the concentric circles with a measuring microscope and multiplying it by a known coefficient, the film thickness can be calculated.

The 518S paint film inspection instrument is a compact device. All important components, including drilling tools, measuring microscopes, sample lighting, and batteries, are installed in a sturdy casing. The drill bit and microscope can slide horizontally, giving the 518S a unique feature: the instrument can measure without moving after drilling. The drill bit is elastically installed in the groove, so that it can be pressed onto the sample with the least force, and then the drill bit will automatically start. Tungsten carbide drill bits are easy to replace and can provide high-precision drill bits with different cutting angles to meet four standard measurement ranges. The measuring microscope has a magnification of 50 and 100 scale lines, so the resolution is 1% regardless of the range.

Operation Method:

Test Principle:
The disc-shaped measuring instrument rolls on the wet film surface. During this process, two rollers roll over the substrate with the center wheel rim. When the distance between the wheel rim and the cam is equal to the measured wet film thickness, the eccentric cam will stick to the coating.
Design and functionality:
The diameter of the hardened and precisely ground stainless steel measuring disc is 50 mm and the thickness is 11 mm. It contains an aluminum freely rotating roller that allows the instrument to roll on the surface.

Pinch the guiding roller of the instrument with your thumb and index finger, and place the instrument on the testing surface so that the contact point is opposite to the zero line. Gently press and roll the instrument towards the zero line, then lift it up.
Measurement 2 (Verification)
The instrument is placed in position 1, but rotated in the opposite direction until it reaches the zero line.
The wet film thickness is read at the location where the wet film mark appears, and compared with the opposite side to obtain the average value.

1) Setting up
Remove the protective cover and place the instrument vertically on the flat surface of the glass plate. If the pointer reading is not zero, it can be adjusted through the slot in the protective cover until the pointer reaches zero position,.
2) Preparation of measurement points
At the measurement point, the coating needs to be carefully scraped open in a 3mm area until it reaches the substrate.
3) Measurement
Place the instrument on the measurement area so that the pins are in contact with the exposed substrate, and the dry film thickness can be directly read in micrometers.
If it is a soft coating, a razor can be placed under the foot of the support.
IIWet film measurement:
First, lift the pin with a rolling screw to obtain a reading that is 0.5 μ m higher than the support pin. Then place the instrument on the wet film, with the legs resting on the substrate. Slowly lower the pin using a rolling screw until it reaches the wet film. The thickness of the coating can be directly read from the dial, in micrometers.
