Thiol groups have high affinity for gold surfaces and are widely used for gold nanoparticle or gold film modification. Carboxyl groups (- COOH) can easily form stable amide bonds with amino groups or ester bonds with hydroxyl groups. PEG modification can improve solubility and stability, and reduce the immunogenicity of proteins and peptides. It can also inhibit the non-specific binding of charged molecules on the modified surface.
